Whether you need a bespoke lighting system or you’ve moved into a house and discovered dodgy wiring, it’s important to do your research before hiring an electrician.
1. Can they self-certify? (Part P)
Electrical work in domestic properties needs to be completed under legal guidelines known as ‘Part P’. This means work needs to be inspected by the local authority or (if they are able to), they can certify the work themselves. In order to self-certify, the electrician must be registered with a competent persons scheme. These include BSI, ELECSA, NAPIT, NICEIC, STROMA, SELECT and TrustMark. On Top Electrical staff are NIEIC registered and so can certify their own work.
2. Do they come recommended?
Read reviews, both on their website or through Yell or Google. Make sure they have been reviewed for relevant jobs. Just because someone is great at installing a cooker, does not mean he or she is a solar panel expert! Check out how people describe a company in terms of dependability and punctuality, too. You can read our most recent reviews, here
3. What will it cost?
Get a quote and agree to it. A good company will ensure your quote includes all costs, broken down across materials and labour. At On Top Electrical, we only use high quality materials and we’ll make this clear in the costings. You can also expect a payment schedule so you know exactly what is owed at what stage.
4. If something seems too good to be true…
It usually is! It’s a cliché, but you do get what you pay for, so beware of what seems like a bargain. When considering different quotes from shortlisted companies, read through carefully to understand exactly what they’re doing and the materials being used. Doing a job properly the first time will undoubtedly save you money in the long-term.
5. A guarantee of their work
And finally, once your job is complete, get a certificate. If the company you’re considering doesn’t agree to issuing one, this should ring alarm bells and you should reconsider working with them!
